Give the bootleggers credit -- while the recording industry proper fights the evolution of technology with all its might, its underground counterpart exploits each new advance to the limits of its potential. Consider the bootleg release Guitar Boogie Shuffle, which devotes two discs to Bob Dylan's complete August 12, 2003, concert at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom and a third to a DVD-R video presentation of the same show. Of course, such lavish treatment would go to waste if the performance in question failed to catch fire, but Dylan is in rare form here, galvanized by guest guitarist Nils Lofgren. Familiar songs like "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and "Like a Rolling Stone" smolder with an energy that belies their age and familiarity. And as for the DVD, suffice it to say it was not shot by a professional film crew, but it's a welcome extra nevertheless and it undeniably enhances the "you are there" immediacy of the overall package.
