AllMusic Review by

Collecting a variety of the recordings with which Willie Nelson hoped to achieve country stardom in the 1960s, Night Life makes it plain both that Nelson was a master songwriter and that with his relaxed, jazzy delivery and a voice that had yet to achieve the weathered quality of his later years, Nashville was no place for him. This set, originally recorded for the Los Angeles-based Liberty label, includes the classic title track, a hit for his former employer Ray Price, as well as the acidic "Blame It on the Times" and the beautiful "Shelter of Your Arms," just a few of the many high-quality songs Nelson wrote during his prolific early-'60s period.
