AllMusic Review by

This two-fer from award-winning singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter features her first two studio albums in their entireties. Her folksy 1987 debut Hometown Girl included a cover of Tom Waits' "Downtown Train," while 1989's more country-oriented State of the Heart landed four singles "How Do," "Never Had It So Good," "Quittin' Time," and "Something of a Dreamer" in the Hot Country Singles Top 20.
