Beyond the big hair and the out-sized public image, Dolly Parton has had a solid strength throughout her long career. She is a world-class songwriter, and this wide ranging collection has several examples of that, including the haunting and edgy "Jolene," the autobiographical "Coat of Many Colors," the sincere "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right" and the timeless classic ballad "I Will Always Love You." The presence of these four tracks alone makes this a decent budget purchase and makes clear that underneath all the country banter and bluster, Parton is a careful and deliberate artist.
