Keyboards

The term "keyboards" may simply, by analogy with "vocals," denote performance on a single keyboard instrument. Often it reflects the fact that a popular album includes several different keyboard instruments, from the time-honored grand piano, to electric pianos, to synthesized sound producers whose sole connection with the piano is that they feature a keyboard. The workaday keyboard instrument of popular music is the electric piano, first marketed in the 1930s and itself displaying a range of types running from an electronically amplified acoustic piano to fully electronic devices. Often, to reproduce the acoustic piano's unique combination of melody and percussion, an electric piano's action involves a hammer striking something that vibrates, although the struck object may not be a string.
