Many of pianist Marian McPartland's recordings from the 1950s and 1960s unjustly are out of print, such as this collection of songs from Leonard Bernstein's hit Broadway musical West Side Story, as well as a pair from Wonderful Town. Joined by bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Jake Hanna, McPartland obvious enjoyed the adventurous spirit and variety within Bernstein's compositions, though she introduced some changes of her own, especially in the swinging opener, "Tonight." The pianist, who has long since become known for her total mastery of ballads, doesn't disappoint with a memorable treatment of "Somewhere" and a lush "Maria." This long out of print LP, issued by the defunct Time label, won't be easy to find.
