Marian McPartland (famous as a modern pianist and for her Piano Jazz radio show) was initially introduced to the jazz major leagues through her husband, the late Jimmy McPartland, who was a talented Dixieland-oriented cornetist. During 1972-73 the McPartlands recorded two of their concerts which were later released on Marian's Halycon label. This CD reissue contains 12 of the 14 selections and these are among Jimmy McPartland's best later recordings. With frontlines that include either trombononist Vic Dickenson and tenorman Buddy Tate or trombonist Hank Berger and clarinetist Jack Maheu, the cornetist performs Dixieland and swing standards with enthusiasm and power, taking an occasional vocal and clearly having a good time. It's recommended for trad fans.
