This is one of many impressive Marian McPartland recordings on her own label, Halcyon. This 1979 trio concert at the famous Carlyle Hotel (where pianist/singer Bobby Short has been the resident artist for decades) features the pianist with bassist Steve LaSpina and drummer Michael Di Pasqua. The lyrical McPartland is especially at home on ballads such as "Like Someone in Love" and "Star Eyes," but that doesn't mean she won't swing them with gusto. In addition to standards such as "For All We Know" and great songs like "Ill Wind" that have unjustly fallen out of favor, her set includes a lush arrangement of Chick Corea's "Crystal Silence" and a brief but energetic take of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps." A CD reissue of this LP (which had lapsed from print in the early '90s when McPartland essentially folded the label) was briefly available on Prevue and added several bonus tracks but, unfortunately, both versions are now out of print. Fans of the always enjoyable Marian McPartland will definitely want to acquire this release.
