Pianist Marian McPartland spent some of her favorite years leading a trio nightly at the Hickory House in New York. This excellent but out of print two-LP set has a little more than half of McPartland's Savoy recordings, including a full album of live performances from the Hickory House. The latter set features McPartland with bassist Vinnie Burke and drummer Joe Morello (before he became famous touring with Dave Brubeck) while the studio sides have Max Wayne or Bob Carter on bass and Morello sharing the drum slot with Mousie Alexander and Mel Zelnick. The emphasis is on sophisticated but swinging renditions of standards and gives one a strong idea of how Marian McPartland sounded in the 1950s.
