Cello

The cello, technically known as a violoncello and sometimes thus written as 'cello, is a large bowed stringed instrument, the second lowest of the family of strings headed by the violin. It originated in the early sixteenth century, as the viols (bowed strings) of the Renaissance began to evolve into the stringed instruments of the modern orchestra; as with the violin, the great craftsmen of the cello were concentrated in northern Italy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The cello became the principal bass instrument of the classical symphony orchestra and string quartet, and is the beneficiary of an impressive literature of solo concertos and sonatas. Much less common as a solo instrument in jazz and pop than are the more powerful string bass and the higher-ranging violin, the cello appears in pop groups of "strings" and occasionally lends its melancholy color to arrangements.
