Vina
Arguably one of the world's most visually attractive musical devices, the vina (or veena) is a large plucked stringed instrument central to the classical musical tradition of southern India. It has two resonating chambers, the main one carved out of wood and extending into a long neck that terminates in the head of a mythological animal. A second resonator, made from a gourd, is attached to the neck. The instrument is held horizontally by a player who sits cross-legged, with the gourd resonator resting on one thigh. The vina has seven strings, three of which are drones (strings that sound a constant pitch throughout a composition).
