Instruments
Lyre
The lyre is a stringed instrument similar to a harp that is most commonly associated with Greek antiquity. While the harp is commonly plucked with the fingers, the lyre is usually strummed with a plectrum similar to a guitar or zither. The lyre also contains a resonating chamber (intitially crafted from a turtle shell) beneath two arched arms that curve outward. Often these curved arms would be hollow as well, topped with a crossbar that would hold tension on the gut strings. Instruments similar to the lyre's construction were also played in Europe, Asia and Africa.
