AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

It's hard to believe that Greatest Hits is the first Kool & the Gang collection to cover both eras of the group's career, but it is. No other collection had contained both "Celebration" and "Jungle Boogie," both "Ladies Night" and "Joanna," both "Get Down On It" and "Fresh." For many casual fans, this is an ideal situation, since all the hits are on one disc, but Greatest Hits could have been a little bit better. For one thing, it's a little short, clocking in at only 11 songs. It also isn't assembled in chronological order, which is a problem, since the difference in styles between the two eras is so drastic that it results in an incoherent listen when it's all jumbled together, as it is here. Still, it's likely that this flaw won't bother many fans, who will simply want all of the hits on one disc, and that's exactly what they'll get here.
