Flashback Review

by Steve Leggett

Cyndi Lauper bounced and strutted through the mid-'80s like a funky fun thrift-store butterfly with songs like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and her version of the New Orleans street classic “Iko Iko,” but she also recorded songs with deeper resonance like “Time After Time,” “True Colors,” and “All Through the Night,” and in retrospect, she now looks like one of the brightest stars of that era. This two-disc set (two brief discs with ten songs each) has all of the above songs, each of which has an enduring spark. The period production values get a little numbing sometimes, but when Lauper gets a song worthy of her time, it hardly matters. Fresh air is fresh air.
