AllMusic Review by

For the sixth volume of Dave's Picks, the successor to the long-running Grateful Dead concert archive series Dick's Picks, two complete early shows are culled from long-missing and finally unearthed reel-to-reel tapes. These shows from late 1969 in San Francisco and early 1970 in St. Louis feature a vibrant document of the phase in the band right before the recording of the breakthrough Workingman's Dead album, including epic performances of "Dark Star," early performances of "New Speedway Boogie," and a jammed-out version of "Turn on Your Lovelight" that spans over 35 minutes. These previously unheard recordings showcase keyboardist Pigpen, who would take ill shortly after these shows, with his combination of ailing health and substance-addled system eventually ending his life in 1973.
