AllMusic Review by

Continuing French CBS's comprehensive mid-'70s reissue of all of Duke Ellington's recordings during the '30s for its labels, this very enjoyable two-fer has small-group sessions led by Johnny Hodges, Barney Bigard and Rex Stewart and such titles by the big band as "Diminuendo in Blue," "Crescendo in Blue" and the exciting "Harmony in Harlem." Other bands during this era may have been better known to the general public, but in reality Duke Ellington's orchestra had no close competitors.
