Surely there should be a standard in the recording industry regarding what the "best" of a certain artist is. In this case, St. Clair has compiled ten tracks from Merle Haggard's Capitol period, all of which are stellar, but calling all of these among his best is a long shot. There are bona fide treasures here, however, and if you are not picky about sound, for the money -- dirt cheap -- this comp has some of his finest, including "Mama Tried," "I Am a Lonesome Fugitive," "Swinging Doors," and "Today I Started Loving You Again."
