Following up on his set of solo piano interpretations of the songs of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Dick Hyman performs 17 songs co-written by Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. While none of the songs were originally composed for use in the jazz world, quite a few have become jazz standards. In addition to the well-known numbers, Hyman revives "Dites-Moi," "A Wonderful Guy," "Many a Nice Day," and the extensive and adventurous "Soliloquy." Hyman, mindful of Rodgers' wary attitude towards jazz improvising, always keeps the melodies close by even as he comes up with consistently surprising variations. This set is well-worth hearing a few times for Dick Hyman's versions owe little to any other renditions. Recommended.
