The second volume of Cafe Noir: Coctail & Lounge features more beats than the former volume, as many of these songs feature subtle and simple electronica foundations lurking beneath the jazzy instrumentation. Again, like the first volume and the many other Cafe Noir albums, Coctail & Lounge, Vol. 2 seems more orientated toward peripheral listening than close analysis -- this music is much more ornamentation than meticulously crafted art. That's not to slight the music here in any way, though. The musicians seem quite capable and many of the songs feature some admittedly captivating sounds, but by its nature, this sort of lounge music is meant for lounging rather than close listening. And if that's all listeners are interested in -- something to play as background music -- this album should serve them well. Just don't expect anything incredibly novel or mind-blowing.
