AllMusic Review by

More house than chill, Cafe Noir: Chill House, Vol. 1 offers a number of relatively no-name producers all crafting the same sort of house sound, a sound that pumps and thumps while at the same time evoking an undeniably sedate aura. It's a nice synthesis actually -- part of the music energetic, part of it soothing. Unfortunately, it's been done better in the past, with albums like Luomo's Vocalcity and the Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld already having set the precedent for the more ambient side of house. And Cafe Noir: Chill House doesn't come anywhere near matching the brilliance of those records. If one is content with rather standard house with a twist of ambience, then they should by all means investigate this entry into the Cafe Noir series. As with other albums in the series, nothing here is incredibly mind-blowing, but everything is still of commendable quality, and since it's fairly formulaic, listeners who like one song will most likely enjoy the entire compilation.
