Michael Martinez's Album Reviews

After coming hot off the trail of her Iconic and most Personal Like A Prayer, controversial Blonde Ambition Tour, Madonna decided to push the envelope more further with Justify My Love and the controversial Erotica album. This album picks up where Like A Prayer left off such as Heartache, Romance, Loss, and of course sex. Lead single Erotica generated a lot of controversies due to the sexual lyrics and the accompany video, which were banned from MTV, but aired after midnight. Despite this, its a pretty decent album with the melancholy songs Bad Girl, Rain, Words and In This Life, which the song was about two of her close friends passed away from AIDS. Overall songs like Bye Bye Baby, Waiting, and Words were written to actor Warren Beatty, whom she dated in 1990 and married actress Annette Benning, whom Madonna bashed in the song Thief Of Hearts with the lines "Here She Comes Acts Like She's Your Best Friend When You Turn Your Back and She's Up With Your Guy" Overall this a great album but can be considered the sequel to 1989's Like A Prayer.

On this 1987 classic solo debut, Jody re-established her music career as a solo artist, which she started out in the group Shalamar. After leaving the group, Jody released her solo debut single Looking For A New Love, which immediately became a smash hit and was named one of the biggest pop and R&B singles in 1987. After the success of her solo debut single, Jody released her second single Still A Thrill, which wasn't successful as Looking For A New Love, although it charted fairly on the R&B charts. Her next two singles, the dance hits Don't You Want Me and Some Kind of Lover chart successfully on the Pop and Dance Charts in its remixed form in 1987/1988. As for the final single Most Of All, didn't chart well on the pop charts but did fare better on the R&B charts. Despite this, all five singles were smash hits and stand out tracks are the sensual Love Injection and the duet with George Michael Learn To Say No.

In 1991, there were many music changes such as crossover to House and New Jack Swing which was the case on this fantastic album. With the album opening with Something About Love produced by Robert Clivilles and David Cole who crafted the sound on the first half of the cd which was the club ready classic Let The Beat Hit Em and standout vocal on the poignant and melancholy ballad Don't Say Goodbye which was very emotional and heartfelt ballad not letting go of your former love and Forever which closes out the first half showcased a vulnerable and softer side of Lisa brings mind to Kiss Your Tears Away. Opening the second half with her longtime producers Full Force going introspective of how Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam began and goes into the Hip House track let It Go which fun and aggressive vocal delivery and its sequel I Like It I Like It . One of the songs should've been ready as a single is the anti-Prejudice Love Will Get Us By and closing out the album is the cover of The Isley Brothers Sensuality which is a stand t of the album. Despite what critics said about this album, it is a true classic and masterpiece.

Back in 1980, Jill Jones made her singing debut on Teena Marie's releases of Lady T, Irons In Fire and Must Be Magic. Later in 1982, she began a professional relationship as a background singer on his classic 1999 album and during the time she began working on her solo album. Highlights on the album are: Mia Bocca, G Spot, Violet Blue All Day All Night and Baby You're A Trip. On Baby You're A Trip, Jill delivers a powerful vocal range and it shows she's a very professional singer. If you want a Prince follower album, this is a must have for any Prince devoted fan.

It's amazing what a 7 year break can change a certain person such as marriage, self discovery. That's what Janet talked about on her comeback album Unbreakable. Since 1993, Janet has tackled topics such as sexuality, racism, homophobia, AIDS awareness, depression and domestic violence. In contrast this album isn't sexually explicit, which was a relief to some listeners and cleanest album since Janet. On this album, she address that she hasn't forgot about her fans, and dedicate herself to her fans, and family which was talked about on the title track. What makes the album the best is she's reunited with Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam who helped her emerged from her brothers shadow and what she is today. Not one weak song at all, the chemistry still the same with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, best of all Janet is Unbreakable and still in Control.

On her debut, Cynthia has a lot of good freestyle jams starting with her debut in 1987 with her single Change On Me which became very popular in clubs, parties and concerts. After the success of her debut she quickly followed up with more singles the club classic Endless Nights (in it's 12 Inch Form) and Thief Of Hearts. One of the album highlights is the cover of France Joli's 1981 classic Gonna Get Over You which is a outstanding cover and very bouncy beats.
