Sounds of Yesteryear's Trumpet Blues gathers Harry James & His Musicmakers performances from the '40s and '50s that include Willie Smith, Corky Corcoran, and Joe Mondragon among the bandmembers. While this collection features few of his definitive tracks aside from "Trumpet Blues and Cantabile," the renditions of "Ready Gal Jump," "Cotton Tail," and "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" are lively and engaging. Gilda Macon's vocals on "Where or When" and the Skylarks' collaboration on "Your Red Wagon" add another nice dimension to this collection, which may not be especially broad or deep, but does feature some good playing from James and his band.
