AllMusic Review by

Franz Waxman, one of the greatest of the old-school Hollywood film score composers, certainly deserves the deluxe treatment he receives in this three-disc set of three of his best scores: Rebecca for Alfred Hitchcock, Sunset Boulevard for Billy Wilder, and Peyton Place for Mark Robson. In these lushly produced, brilliantly conducted, and superbly played recordings, the spirit of each work is captured to perfection -- Rebecca's slowly gathering dread, Sunset Boulevard's morbid decadence, and, above all, Peyton Place's deep humanity. With the Royal Scottish National Orchestra on center stage, with Joel McNeely leading Rebecca and Sunset Boulevard and Frédéric Talgorn leading Peyton Place, and with Robert Townson in the production booth, these scores get widescreen, Technicolor recordings. Even the liner notes are first class -- entertaining, informative, and, with Billy Wilder's appreciation of Waxman included, authoritative. Anyone who loves film scores should hear these discs.
