AllMusic Review by

Franz Waxman's deeply atmospheric, Hebraic-themed score for the Old Testament-based drama of The Story of Ruth gets a good transfer on this European-produced CD, which offers a richly detailed remastering. The music is memorable and challenging, often imitating the sounds of the shofar and other accoutrements of the ancient world -- much of it is filled with sharp dissonance, especially brass stings that make this among the most unsettling of scores for a major motion picture of this time period. The moments of lyricism, such as "Machlon's Death," stand in sharp contrast to the rest of the score, but most of the rest is among the most daring of Waxman's career.
