Carlo Marchiori's Album Reviews

An album hitting exactly the right spot at the right time, setting itself at the crossroad of many musical paths that preceded and followed it: punk, hard core, pop, folk, noise, psychedelic rock, post rock.

By 1968 the Beatles had become so assuming to think every casual musical fragment of theirs deserved to be admired by their listeners. This way in this record you can find a bunch of great songs and some brilliant musical ideas side by side with silly and boring tunes, which makes the listening from first song to last quite challenging. Had they stick to the best material and issued a single LP, this would have been probably one of their greatest records.

This album shows Dinosaur Jr at a stage when their distinctive sound and style wasn't fully formed.

Yet many aspects of their later music are present, J Mascis melodically inclined songwriting (Severe Lips) and outbursts of noise and adrenaline (Bulbs of Passion).

All songs have a freshness not always present in later works and make a rewarding and compelling listening.

A great album that we'll be revalued in due time.

All songs are unique in melody and structure and the sound is immaculate, noisy and chaotic yet perfectly controlled in every minute detail.

An indie rock masterpiece waiting for a proper recognition.

J Mascis comes back to the territory he's better confident in, after Where You Been forays into a public pleasing and unsuitable territory.

All songs show a good creative vein, being quite inspired in melody and musical structure, often bringing those inventiveness gems which are unmistakably J Mascis signature.

The sound feels simpler and fresher than the previous two records, without the elaborate and unnecessary layerings.

For being an unfinished work, it still manages to be another unique work that fully displays Dinger and Rother ability to do more with less.

This kind of shouting and crying would be pretentious by almost everybody except Cap'n Jazz.

Greatest psychedelic noise album of all times.

This album trades a bit of the exploring attitude of its predecessor for a more refined sound and more song oriented musical writing. Nevertheless the listening is almost as rewarding with Budge track being maybe the most remarkable on the album with its forward thrusting pace, minimalistic form and unordinary style.

Not dissimilar from other contemporary outfits. But there's something making these records special, they have a soulful heart where others turn out just empty.
