Considered their crowning achievement, 1974’s Desolation Boulevard contains more ringing balladry (“The Six Teens”), catchy, swinging modal runs (“Solid Gold Brass”), Slade-derived screaming (“Turn It Down”), half-acoustic balladry (“Lady Starlight”), a re-arrangement of the Elmer Bernstein’s “(Themes from) The Man with the Golden Arm” with a lengthy drum solo and a cover of The Who’s “My Generation”. More like an EP to cash in on the fame than a studio album, just as inconsistent as their whole discography, despite some highlights. Unifying the originals on this one and the previous would have resulted in a proper, solid release.
