Wow. What an incredible album that is timeless. I love albums that are out there, that are experimental... and this is a great one that i can see myself coming back to again and again.
If you haven't listened to this album i won't spoil it, but please, do go check it out.
I love Scott Walker, and this just became one of my favorites of his.
Favorite tracks: Shutout, Nite Flights, The Electrician, Death of Romance, Child of Flames.
Least favorite track: Fury and the Fire.
With an Incredible amount of talent and energy, Slipknot returns with their astonishing new record.
There is enough here to please all the fans, those who like the heavier aspects of Slipknot, and those who prefer their more melodic sound.
This album excels not only in musical ability, but also in the technical department. Is sounds so modern, yet parts bring back memories from earlier Knot records. It sounds almost as if they combined their first three albums together, creating this amazing and grotesque Frankenstein monster! With Corey Taylor's vocals sounding at their best! (In my opinion, of course).
Yeah, there are a couple songs that feel a little underdeveloped, and could use some variety, but the vast majority of the album delivers on that, luckily.
Favorite Tracks: Too many to name, all of them beside my least favorites.
Least Favorite Tracks: "Death Because of Death", "My Pain". I don't hate these songs, I just felt like they didn't bring much to the table when comparing them to all the others.
9/10
When i first joined this site, i gave this album a 7 (3.5/5 stars). I thought it was good but not great, although, recently i revisited this album and had more fun than the other times i heard it.
I am not sure why but this album is just so...FUN!
I have been a Marilyn Manson fan for nearly 8 years now, and just now, this record got me enjoying it almost all the way through.
Maybe it's because of its raw nature, or its dark, twisted, grotesque sense of humor. Maybe it's both. And yes, it's legitimately funny and cool.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM NOW! Gave it an extra point! 8/10.
Favorite tracks: Cake and Sodomy, Lunchbox, Cyclops, Dope Hat, Get Your Gunn, Wrapped in Plastic, Dogma, My Monkey.
Least favorite tracks: Organ Grinder, Sweet Tooth.
My personal favorite Tom Waits album. The moment I pressed "Play", and "Misery Is the River of the World" started, I was immediately enchanted.
It was the first time I heard Wait's more experimental music. And at this point, I have listened to all of his discography, most of which I absolutely love (like Bone Machine). However, Blood Money remains my favorite.
The main attraction of this record is its relentlessly cynical and hostile nature. Songs like the aforementioned "Misery Is the River of the World" and "God's Away on Business" give a strong sense of hopelessness and despair. Yet there are a few songs here that have a more gentle and soft sound. Tracks like "All the World Is Green" and "The Part You Throw Away", that are a great contrast to the harsher songs on this album. Another thing to note is the closing track, "A Good Man Is Hard to Find". Easily the saddest song, and the most beautiful. It is one of the gentle songs here, but the feeling of hopelessness is abundantly present.
Overall, I feel like this is an album best listened to when you are feeling down, and in need of some recognition or comfort. Unless of course, it makes you feel worse. In that case, listen to it afterwards. To me, however, this is an album with spectacular music, and a great source of consolation.
Favorite Tracks: "Misery Is the River of the World", "Everything Goes to Hell", "Coney Island Baby", "All the World Is Green", "Starving in the Belly of a Whale", "A Good Man Is Hard to Find".
Least Favorite Track: "Woe".
10/10
Now that Heaven Upside Down is coming out, i'm happy to say that Marilyn Manson did not disappoint.
While not as amazing as my favorite Manson album, Holy Wood, it does come very close to surpassing my second favorite album, The Pale Emperor.
Heaven Upside Down is DEFINITELY a worthy competitor in the Manson discography.
Although, Manson himself said that this will not be his last album and feels ready to start making another one.
Favorite tracks: Revelation #12, Tattooed in Reverse, We Know Where You Fucking Live, Kill4Me, Saturnalia, Je$u$ Cri$i$.
Least favorite track: Blood Honey.
WARNING: Long review ahead.
Let's just jump right in. The album opens with "Born for One Thing", probably my favorite of the singles that were released. It has that same fire and power that we've come to know from Gojira. Plus, the breakdown.
Next, we have "Amazonia". Yeah, this one rocks hard, and not just in the traditional sense. There is the obvious message of what is happening in the Amazon that is truly heartbreaking. I am very thankful that such a great song will bring further awareness to the madness.
"Another world" has grown on me a lot over time. It took a few listens, but when it clicked, I was very into it. Especially the bridge where Joe does those clean vocals.
I was very surprised when I heard "Hold On". Many reviews said it was one of the more melodic songs on the album when it's pretty aggressive. It was very enjoyable though. It's a very good track and has a fire chorus.
"New Found" is an instant highlight for me. Easily the most dynamic song. Plenty heavy, plenty melodic. A perfect balance with a great chorus. No more needs to be said.
Not much to say about "Fortitude". It's a good instrumental and serves its purpose as the bridge to "The Chant ". This song was made to sound like a classic heavy metal track and it works beautifully. Gojira further demonstrates their versatility and willingness to experiment. Another highlight for me.
"Sphinx" is another one that subverted my expectations. Remember Hold On? Well, it's like that but the opposite. Don't get me wrong, it's plenty heavy. But it has melodic parts as well. Still, a crushing song.
Alright, now comes the part where I have to explain why I'm forced to remove half a star... The sound mixing. There are multiple instances where the sound of the record feels muffled and unclear. None of this is more apparent in "Into the Storm", my least favorite track on the album. Remember when I was praising the choruses on the other songs here? That makes me even more perplexed as to why they couldn't figure out a more creative chorus for this song when I know they can do better. I'm sorry, but it sounds, for a lack of a better word, generic. And don't get me started on the lyrics. The only saving grace for this track is Mario. His skills and precision are undeniable.
Moving on, we've got "The Trails", Another pleasant surprise. I bet this one is going to be one of, if not, the most underrated song on the record. Joe sings beautifully, and it's as mellow as a Gojira song can get.
Now, the ending. "Grind".
Every member of the band is at the top of their game. Mario being Mario. Jean with that tasty bass tone. Christian with the bombastic guitar playing. And Joe's vocals sounding their most sinister and evil on the album. This is definitely one of my favorites and will be playing it on repeat.
Favorite Tracks: "Born for One Thing", "Amazonia", " New Found", "The Chant ", "The Trails", "Grind".
Least Favorite Tracks: "Into the Storm".
9/10
Another showcase of the band's genius and innovation. I absolutely love this album and I await eagerly to see what they bring us in the future.
Favorite Tracks: "Dignity", "Heart in Hand", "Lovelorn Crime", "Universal Truth", "The Garroter", "All Things Will Pass".
Least Favorite Track: "Continuum".
An epic and amazing album by Marilyn Manson. This is his best record, in my opinion.
The tracks are eerie, dark, depressing (though at times uplifting), hardcore and merciless.
Manson succeeds in getting his message across through his lyrics and his phenomenal vocal performance.
Instrumentally, this album does not disappoint from its raging drums to its eerie and powerful guitars.
Manson is still making great music today.
Makes me wonder if he'll one day surpass this masterpiece...
Favorite tracks: The Love Song, The Fight Song, Target Audience, In the Shadow of the Valley of Death, The Nobodies, The Death Song, Lamb of God, Burning Flag, Valentine's Day, King Kill 33ยบ, Count to Six and Die (The Vacuum of Infinite Space Encompassing).
Least favorite track: Born Again.
My favorite Soen album. A must for prog and classic rock fans!
Many songs give me a sense of nostalgia and take my breath away.
If you've heard of people speaking highly of this album, and never got the chance to hear it, please give it a spin.
I can clearly see why there is so much buzz surrounding this album. It's a masterpiece.
Every single track is phenomenal, and I am already thinking of the next time I'll hear it.
If you are a Whitechapel fan and still haven't heard this album, do yourself a favor and have a listen. The Valley easily earns a 10/10 from me.
