I have played this CD as background music while having friends over and each time I have I am asked about it. This one is a keeper. Buy it, listen to it with friends and enjoy. Van is The Man and, here, is an example an excellent recording.
No other Stones recording is like this one. This album was the Stones heavier response to The Beatles' popular Sgt. Pepper. Sitar music, mellotron fills, jazz flute solos for a Psychedelic, Trippy and Spacey sound. No Chicago blues tunes here. The original LP had a Lenticular 3d image that changed as you held the LP jacket at different angles. Songs Citadel has heavy riff, In Another Land is a dream theme complete with snores. 2000 Man and 2000 Light Years from Home are great listens with headphones. Sing This All Together is a jam. Other tunes are good just different from what you expect. Best way to experience this recording is to listen to Sgt Pepper's then listen to this -- it makes sense as the Stones were the opposite of the Beatles in the 60s. I enjoyed this recording quite a bit due to it being such a departure.
In 1968 FM was not an option for your car so you were left with AM and top 40 with Honey by Bobby Goldsboro, The Beatles Hey Jude or Young Girl by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. I bought this LP in 1968 because of the album cover. The music was everything I wanted - psychedelic guitar riffs with long jams, a touch of Jazz and going on for more than the standard top 40 3 minutes. There are a few pop songs too but better than top 40. Worth owning and listen to it loud or with your ear buds so you can crank the John Cipollina tuned guitar solos. 5 stars indeed.
This album captures the 60s San Francisco vibe perfectly. if you were alive in the 60s you get it. The 60s were about experimentation and this is one if the better results of that time. Headphone it late at night and then write a review. This is a great recording that gets better with age. 5 stars
Early Steve Miller worth owning; another one with Boz Scaggs. Tim Davis' excellent drumming stays with Steve all they way to LP Number 5. Cannot go wrong with buying the first 5 SMB recordings Top notch vocals, guitar, bass, organ and drums from one of the best bands in the late 60s early 70's.
Great psychedelic Blues and acoustic with Boz Scaggs to boot.! One of the first records I owned with that west coast soundscape. This recording will always be linked with SMB's next LP, "Salior", and used to be packaged as a 2 for 1. Pick up both on Vinyl if you can find it; otherwise download the digital versions.
I got this one when it first came out and loved it. Bought it again on CD and play it often. Awesome music and when I play it people always ask "Who is this?" Great album by a great band.
If you haven't heard this 5 star album then I'm so glad you survived your coma. Now buy it and catch up. Time is the Avenger!
1975 through 1979 was an awesome period for Joni's music. She abandoned Pop and let the world hear what she heard. Awesome recordings and she cut a path for artists that followed. You can hear it if you listen to this one and then listen to Nora Jones, Regina Specktor, Imogen Heap and St.Vincent to name a few.
Good Morning to you! The last of the first 5 EARLY SMB. The first three tunes will hook you. Great headphone rock. Going to Mexico in stereo is pure Steve Miller Band. The first 5 LPs are classics and this one is the last of the best. Still played on classic rock stations. Just own it for car/road tunes!
