The new album from Philadelphia's Ruby the Hatchet combines an organ-driven Deep Purple groove, layered female vocals, and a fuzzy sound that's nostalgic but not dated. Cuts like the downright blissful "Vast Acid" and the doom-laden "Tomorrow Never Comes" create an enveloping atmosphere that carries throughout the album, all the way through the acoustic-tinged closing track.
Valley of the Snake is out this week on Tee Pee Records, and the band will be playing a number of shows at South by Southwest next month.
