Instead of providing a barrage of music to enhance this war epic's action scenes, Nick Glennie-Smith chose a more moving, elegiac approach that effectively underscores the emotions and intensity of the characters. Occasional military-style percussion cadences act as reminders of the film's setting, while a terrific, almost alien soundscape appears in "NVA Base Camp," lending further depth to the score. The CD features several standout solo instrumental passages, particularly in the tracks "Telegrams" and "Photo Montage," with some stirring choral work and throbbing electronic textures added for the final tracks. Overall, it's a haunting and atmospheric work that holds up well under repeat listenings.
