The phrase "very best" in the title of The Very Best of Barry White: Under the Influence of Love is a little disingenuous. This ten-track compilation is not a collection of his biggest hits; it's an overview of his earliest recordings with the Love Unlimited Orchestra. While there aren't any big hits here, and many of the songs are underdeveloped, White's seductive, string-drenched style can be heard in embryonic form on this disc, which makes it of interest to hardcore collectors.
