While drummer William Hooker's music can occasionally be so furious it careens right out of the genre of jazz altogether, landing somewhere in the neighborhood of experimental noise, on the live album THIS SEASONS FIRE Hooker offers a beautiful, almost sensual set without sacrificing a modicum of his trademark intensity. The trio of Hooker, guitarist Bill Horist, and Eyvind Kang on violin locks in from note one, creating atmospheric pieces that allow each member full range to explore the outer edges of the avant universe, while maintaining an airtight sonic whole. Hooker is one of free jazz's most exciting drummers and, while he is often the focal point here, THE SEASONS FIRE is an ensemble work in the truest sense of the word.
