Recorded the night Kurt Cobain's body was found, Envisioning presents a powerful, aggressive document of Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo's ongoing collaboration with drummer William Hooker. This album, a complete recording of their first set from that evening along with highlights from the second set, features Ranaldo and Hooker's beat-influenced poetry backed by their noisy, avant-garde accompaniment. From time to time, the music gets a little bit repetitive and the poetry overwrought, caught up in the momentum of the event. The music, unfortunately, lacks the cohesive flow that it might have and, therefore, loses its possible impact. The two are best when their poetry is the most realist, their music the most out.
