AllMusic Review by

The Preacher: Live '83 was recorded at the Brixton Ace in 1983, just as Spear of Destiny were setting out, and captures audience and musicians alike feeling one another out. The crowd was hoping for a Theatre of Hate show, the band had no intention of giving them one, and (although a few of the old favorites did creep into the set) it was the band who succeeded. Much of the material showcased here -- 18 songs, including a soul-stirring "Flying Scotsman" and the curiously underrated "Everything You Ever Wanted" -- would ultimately appear on Spear of Destiny's debut album, from whence it would ultimately journey into legend. This, however, is how it sounded before most people had even heard it, and you can feel the audience warming to the music. They even stopped shouting for "Westworld" in the end!
