Avoiding all of the typical adjectives for drum'n'bass (rolling, hard-hitting, jazzy, or atmospheric), Norway's biggest jungle export, TeeBee, has assembled a mix of tracks, produced exclusively by himself and partner K, along with like-minded producers AngelZero and Future Prophecies, that dodges musical clichés at every turn. Taking a serious lesson from the techno-inducing breaks of Photek (before he decided to make Chicago house), the music is dark without being foreboding, smart without being complicated, and beautiful without being cheesy. Even the tempo runs at an even keel, remaining alert without becoming hyperactive. The only complaint might be that the mix doesn't show much sense of progression, but this CD is clearly trying to take the listener inward, and not upward. In other words, this is the perfect jungle CD for the techno head who wants to like the sound of drum'n'bass, but can't get past the pogo-ing silliness of jump-up or the overly aggressive posturing of tech-step.
