Another in a long line of Blue Note roundup discs, The Best of Freddie Hubbard maintains the pace with a fine selection from the trumpeter's prime hard bop work for the venerable jazz label. Starting off with a fine cut from the relatively obscure Blue Forces LP ("Outer Forces"), the six selections take in classics like "Open Sesame" and "Hub Tones," Hubbard's Charlie Parker homage, "Birdlike," and an '80s side with fellow high-flying trumpeter Woody Shaw. Besides Shaw, the disc features a slew of great players like Hank Mobley, Jimmy Heath, James Spaulding, Herbie Hancock, and Philly Joe Jones. A very enjoyable way to get familiar with one of the all-time great jazz trumpeters.
