AllMusic Review by

Texas Hoedown Revisited returns to fertile ground to deliver a solid volume of old-time fiddling by masters Benny Thomasson, Vernon Solomon, Bartow Riley, and Lewis Thomasson. These recordings were captured between 1965-1970, and a number of these instrumentals were originally released on County and Voyager records in the '60s and '70s. These selections have been augmented by previously unreleased music for a total of 24 selections--or nearly 54 minutes--of authentic fiddle tunes. On these fiddle tunes, the fiddler frequently receives backup from a guitar, piano, or bass. The piano, in particular, will seem like an odd instrument to accompany fiddle if one is unfamiliar with Texas fiddling traditions. But as is evident on selections like "Sally Johnson" and "Sunnyside" with Solomon on fiddle, Rickie Solomon's piano fits unobtrusively into the background. Whatever the background, these four fiddlers come to the forefront of the mix, allowing listeners a chance to enjoy the distinctive qualities of each style. The liner notes--always a bonus with County--offer background on Texas fiddling, the importance it played in the history of country music, and bios of the four fiddlers included here. For fiddlers, fiddle lovers, and anyone who appreciates authentic old-time music, Texas Hoedown Revisited is a solid collection.
