AllMusic Review by

St. Louis's red-light district became a magnet for many of the greatest blues pianists and singers of the era. This 19-track CD features many of the best of them. Well-known and accomplished ticklers such as Roosevelt Sykes, Henry Brown, Aaron "Pinetop" Sparks, and the High Sheriff himself, Peetie Wheatstraw, play host to singers such as Mary Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Dorotha Trowbridge and Alice Moore -- who, despite their relative obscurity, are quite talented and turn in more than a few minor classics. Spicing the instrumental mix are trombonist Ike Rodgers and guitarist Lonnie Johnson. Despite the poor sound-quality of the first four tracks, this music is well-chosen and highly recommended.
