Originally from Los Angeles, the Platters personified class. Zola Taylor gave the group a different look and probably inspired the makeup of the Miracles, Ruby & the Romantics, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and others. The Platters always dressed elegantly, with the guys in tuxedos or formal-looking attire and Taylor in long formal dinner dresses and gowns, looking like a queen stepping and hitting notes with the guys. That said, this brief compilation misses the mark; there are only ten songs, and a mere one "With This Ring" from the '60s Sonny Turner-led Platters. The other nine are the career-building hits carved with Tony Williams, including "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "My Prayer," "Only You," and "The Great Pretender." Even appetizer lovers will be dissatisfied with this skimpy set, especially when more comprehensive compilations are available.
