Rhino's three-volume Soul Hits series is aimed directly at casual soul fans (the kind who listen to oldies stations but would like a break from the commercials), or those who are just getting their feet wet without wanting to make a major investment. Though the discs contain only ten songs, they're budget-priced and stick to the basics -- mostly from the early and mid-'60s -- without straying at all. Every song is a certified soul classic. The third volume includes Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools," Eddie Floyd's "Knock on Wood," Rufus Thomas' "Walking the Dog," and the Impressions' "It's All Right."
