Soul Brothers & Sisters of the 70's Review

by Stephen Cook

'70s soul gets the K-Tel treatment, but only with a scant ten hits. If it's any consolation, though, the mix features some classic sides perfect for your next pop-groove get together. These are true hits to be sure, ranging from mega-smashes by Chic ("Le Freak") and Rose Royce ("Car Wash") to R&B chart successes from the Independents ("Leaving Me") and the Harvey Fuqua-led New Birth ("Dream Merchant"). And in addition to more gold by Hues Corporation, the Five Stairsteps, and the Staple Singers, the disc wraps things up with a hint of things to come in Peaches & Herb's slick, proto-'80s soul ballad "Reunited."
