John B.'s debut 12" for Formation is a calling card for the forthcoming full-length. The title track is the keeper here, treading dark techstep territory, his knack for subtle jazz phrasing adding a less gimmicky edge to otherwise hissing darkness. The track's strong point, though, is (as usual) the beatwork; "Slamfunk" absolutely swarms with shards of a dozen different breaks, cycling about in frenzied recombination amongst pointed bass throbs and chaotic atmospheres. The flip is a less interesting minimal tech roller similar to Boymerang's "Still."
