Pianist Connie Crothers and tenor saxophonist Lenny Popkin have co-led a quartet for quite a few years. Their approaches are pretty compatible, with Crothers having a pretty original style inspired by Lennie Tristano while Popkin's tone recalls Warne Marsh in spots, although his improvising is more advanced and his sound is lighter. With bassist Rich Califano and drummer Carol Tristano sounding fine in a supportive role, Crothers and Popkin explore a variety of familiar chord changes, some of which are more disguised than others. Straight-ahead jazz collectors will want to get some samples of this group, and Session is an excellent place to start.
