Drummer Sebastian Whittaker's role model is Art Blakey, so it is little surprise that his series of recordings for Justice sound strongly influenced by Blue Note and the Jazz Messengers. However, this sextet session emphasizes group originals and features particularly colorful soloists in trumpeter Barry Lee Hall (the last great graduate from Duke Ellington's Orchestra) and altoist Jesse Davis. Trombonist James Lakey, pianist Stefan Karlsson, and bassist David Craig (holdovers from Whittaker's previous release) keep up with the better-known players and the result is high-quality hard bop. Recommended.
