Most of the music on this LP (12 of the 16 selections) has since been reissued in definitive form by Hep on CD. However collectors who do not have that set will find this exciting album quite enjoyable. Xylophonist Red Norvo is heard on his earliest recordings, making a strong statement on his showcase "Knockin' on Wood," featuring Benny Goodman (on bass clarinet) during memorable versions of "In a Mist" and "Dance of the Octopus" and leading all-star groups that star such sidemen as trombonist Jack Jenney, clarinetist Artie Shaw, Charlie Barnet and Chu Berry on tenors, pianist Teddy Wilson, drummer Gene Krupa and trumpeter Bunny Berigan. The final four numbers are taken from 1936-38 recording sessions by Norvo's big band; Mildred Bailey has two vocals and Eddie Sauter provided the advanced arrangements. Classic music.
