Rarities Edition: Mad Dogs & Englishmen Review

by Thom Jurek

If you purchased the Deluxe Edition of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen back in 2006, know that you already have everything on this CD. The initially released single-CD version contained the 19 tracks from 1970's double LP version. When Universal released the Deluxe Edition, they created a second CD by interspersing into the sequence eight additional cuts from the various Fillmore performances and placed four studio recordings onto the end. This Rarities Edition contains that material only -- not the original album. The eight live cuts feature four songs with Cocker on lead vocals ("The Weight," "Something," "Darling Be Home Soon," and "With a Little Help from My Friends"), two by Leon Russell ("Hummingbird" and "Dixie Lullaby"), and one each by Claudia Lennear and Don Preston. The four studio tracks include a "Warm Up Jam" resulting in a loose performance of "Under My Thumb." In addition, there are the two studio singles released to promote the album ("The Letter" and "Space Captain" with Cocker fronting Russell's Shelter People), and Russell sings "The Ballad of Mad Dogs & Englishmen" accompanied by a string section. This disc is sold for a budget price, but unless the buyer reads the bottom of the back of the jewel box, it might not be clear that this is previously released material.
