Lucky Thompson recorded quite a bit during his visit to France in 1956; fortunately most of the music has been reissued at one time or another. For this 1985 LP, the classic tenor is heard on side one mostly with a quintet comprised of trumpeter Emmett Berry, pianist Henri Renaud, bassist Benoit Quersin and drummer Dave Pochonet. Berry has "Blues dor Frank" as a feature while Thompson is joined by just bass and drums on "Thin Ice." Side two has Thompson accompanied by a top-notch rhythm section that includes pianist Martial Solal and on three of the six numbers he is joined by fellow tenor Guy Lafitte. The emphasis throughout (except for a two-song ballad medley on side one) is on Thompson's originals which are fresh and swinging. Worth searching for.
