The Minstrels of Annie Street is a trad jazz group inspired by the music of Lu Watters and Turk Murphy. The frontline (cornetist Bob Schulz, trombonist John Gill, Phil Howe on clarinet and soprano and occasionally trumpeter Chris Tyle) is particularly strong and spirited while the rhythm section (pianist Ray Skjelbred, banjoist Carl Lunsford, Bill Carroll on tuba and drummer Hal Smith) is perfectly adept at this style. The repertoire is wide ranging with obscurities from both the 1920s and the '40s Dixieland revival, a bit of ragtime and a few numbers from the Watters and Murphy book. Because the musicianship is quite high (as is the enthusiasm level), this CD is easily recommended to fans of traditional jazz.
