This is a very standard WEA International compilation of Antonio Carlos "Tom" Jobim hits. That said, his own versions always stand out from the various versions he did with others. His "Ligia," "Fotographia," and "Angela," stand out from the imitators, and in some cases, these later versions stand out form the earlier ones due to the emotional depth he puts into them as a singer as opposed to a more youthful naiveté. And while it's true that the Astrud Gilberto/Stan Getz/Jobim collaboration on "Garota de Ipanema," is recognized as definitive, there is something wonderfully swinging and lecherous about Jobim's own version. There's real longing in it for the unattainable. Recommended.
