Mother of Pearl Review

by Carol Wright

Two pioneers of new age music -- flutist Schawkie Roth and harpist Joel Andrews -- team up on Mother of Pearl, with absolutely heavenly results. Andrews is proficient in classical harp forms, ancient tonal modes, and a special brand of channeled spiritual music; his playing seems to build temples of spirit and to rain down blessings and puddles of spiritual light. Andrews' themes are so beautiful you can disappear in them and not notice the complexity of his tempos, scales, and special harp effects. Schawkie Roth's flute glides like a silver bird or a messenger angel. The liner notes state that Roth and Andrews played to the inspiration of two essential oils, Mother of Pearl and Green Ray, and it's impressive to hear how in sync the two musicians were. The 22-minute meditation "Awakening in Peace" brings Roth's serene flute to the fore. Together they weave visions of a spiritual Shangri-la, peaceful, exotic, transformative.
